The Art Of Finding Series Segment 4 – Tools Of The Trade

In this fourth installment of “The Art Of Finding Elk Series”, Brian and I talk about “The Tools Of The Trade”.  I see many elk hunters make three common mistakes when it comes to The Tools Of The Trade. (1) They do not learn all of the ins, outs and functionality of the technology and platforms. (2) They do not make use the full potential of the available tools.  (3) They get focused on a single tool or platform, and fail to use the right tool for the job.  I spend a lot of time in the course dealing with technology and using the right tool or tools for the job. Expanding your capabilities with the available tools and platforms WILL increase your odds of finding more elk. It is that simple!

Knowledge is power when it comes to finding and actually killing elk! The very best elk hunters I know are never satisfied. They are on a continual mission to expand their knowledge base. Here is another great E-Scouting podcast that you can use to expand yours. Beau Martonik, from the East Meets West Hunt Podcast, is another one of those guys that is crazy about E-Scouting and using technology to its full advantage. It was a real honor to be on his podcast. This one is especially “gold” for those eastern guys that are currently, or thinking about making the western elk journey!

“On this episode of the East Meets West Hunt podcast, Beau Martonik is joined by Mark Livesay of Treeline Pursuits and owner of the Treeline Academy E-Scouting Masterclass. Mark has spent most of his life living in the midwest, but chasing elk every year in the west. E-scouting is extremely important for those of us that can’t get “boots on the ground”, so in this episode, we discuss how to develop a strategic hunt plan that will be your playbook for your hunt. Then, we dive into identifying your core hunt areas and establishing the zones of pressure by breaking down your hunting unit.”

He gives two great Facebook groups that are great for new hunters, those being “Non Resident Western Big Game Hunters” and “Elk Addicts”. Mark gives all kinds of advice throughout this show, but the number one bit he has is don’t let all of the little details that go into hunting out west detour you from making the leap. Just do it.

Episode 28: E-scouting for Top-Notch Fishing Spots, with Mark Livesay

This is another fun podcast I did. I loved talking with Katie about E-Scouting prime trout water. When I’m not chasing elk, I’m out chasing trout on the rivers of Montana. I use some of the same E-Scouting techniques, tools and platforms to help me uncover prime locations. In this podcast we talk specifically about that process.

“Mark Livesay is a well-known name in the E-Scouting world. A favorite guest among hunting podcasts, Mark is the founder of Treeline Pursuits, a website and course that teach the ins and outs of e-scouting for elk. In the summers when he’s not chasing elk, Mark spends a great deal of time fly fishing the area around Yellowstone, and he applies similar techniques to searching for hidden gem fishing spots. In this episode, he does a deep dive into how he sets up the programs he uses, how he organizes his digital waypoints, what he looks for in a lake or river, and a ton of specific tools and resources that can help anyone read the land better from home.” www.fishuntamed.com

Episode 10.38: Elk Rut, Moon and Equinox

I do spend a lot of time E-Scouting, but I also spend a lot of time before the season analyzing the Equinox in relation to the moon phases. I think the Equinox plays a huge role and I use it specifically to schedule my “A” Elk Hunts. In this podcast, John and I dive into that hot topic.

“How to combine the equinox with the moon phases? How does this combination apply to our hunt planning? Unlike some, I don’t believe the moon phase changes the actual dates of the elk rut. I’m convinced that when cows come into estrus, it is game on—no matter what the moon is doing. The equinox is the key factor in determining the estrus cycle. The moon has little, if anything, to do with it. However, as a hunter, I don’t think you should just ignore the moon phase. It may not change the estrus cycle, but it can dramatically affect your hunting success and especially your tactics.”
