In this Treeline Pursuits video cast segment, we discuss how to dehydrate and package fruit to take in the backcountry. We also dig into more detail on the mylar bag packaging I use for my dehydrated meals. This year I made the commitment to go DIY with my meals and I’ve added some fruit to the list.

The Equipment And Supplies I Use:

  • Cabela’s 80-Liter Commercial Food Dehydrator
  • Products I get from www.sorbentsystems.com
    • 8.5″ X 8.75″  – Silver ZipSeal Mylar Bags – These are the perfect sizes for about 2 cups of dehydrated product. You can package your meals in them and then cook (add boiling water) in them. This is almost exactly the way that Mountain House products work. You can purchase these bags in smaller quantities, 100 bags for $50. Product Number : 085MFSOZE0875
    • 10″ X 12″  – Silver ZipSeal Mylar Bags – These are the next size up and they are also good for 2-3 cups of dehydrated product. You can package your meals and then cook in them. This is the same bag as above, just a little bigger. You can purchase these bags in smaller quantities, 100 bags for $50. Product Number: 10MBIL12OZE
    • 9.0″ X 13.375″ X 4.75″  – Silver ZipSeal Standup Bottom Mylar Bags – These are bigger bags that have a standup bottom. They are very nice, but a bit too big for a single serving meal package. These could be used for larger meals and certainly for a couple or small family setup.  Y Product Number: FDR0475Z
